Employer Identification Number (EIN)
An EIN is a 9-digit number (for example, 12-3456789) assigned to employers, sole proprietors, corporations, partnerships, estates, trusts, and other entities for tax filing and reporting purposes. An LLC with multiple partners usually has to obtain an EIN. Use Form SS-4 to apply for an employer identification number (EIN). In the form, you have to include details about the entity, its activity, the reason for applying, and the responsible party information.
Responsible party
The “responsible party” is the person who ultimately owns or controls the entity or who exercises ultimate effective control over the entity. The person identified as the responsible party should have a level of control over, or entitlement to, the funds or assets in the entity that, as a practical matter, enables the person, directly or indirectly, to control, manage, or direct the entity and the disposition of its funds and assets. Unless the applicant is a government entity, the responsible party must be an individual (that is, a natural person), not an entity.
File Form 8822-B to report any subsequent changes to responsible party information, within 60 days.
How to Apply for an EIN
There are four ways to apply for an EIN:

-
Apply Online
The online application process is available for all entities whose principal business or office is located in the United States. Once the application is completed, the information is validated during the online session, and an EIN is issued immediately.
-
Apply by Fax
Taxpayers can fax the completed Form SS-4 application to the appropriate fax number. If it is determined that the entity needs a new EIN, one will be assigned using the appropriate procedures for the entity type. If the taxpayer's fax number is provided, a fax will be sent back with the EIN within four (4) business days.
-
Apply by Mail
Taxpayers can mail the completed Form SS-4 application to the appropriate address. If it is determined that the entity needs a new EIN, one will be assigned using the appropriate procedures for the entity type and mailed to the taxpayer. The processing timeframe for an EIN application received by mail is four weeks.
-
Apply by Telephone
International applicants may call the IRS to obtain their EIN. The person making the call must be authorized to receive the EIN and answer questions concerning the Form SS-4. The information is validated during the phone call, and an EIN is issued immediately.
